Picking a Sheen

The finish doesn’t have anything to do with color, but instead with its shininess. Read this article to determine if you want Flat/Matte, Eggshell, Satin, Semi-Gloss or Gloss.
Flat or Matte…absorbs light. For that reason, a matte finish is good for a quiet space such as a bedroom. Matte finishes cover up small bumps and cracks. This finish is NOT washable. It will show if you try to wash down your walls. This may be the option of choice if you have an area that has less than perfect walls. This may not be the best option if you have young children or pets and will need to be able to wash the walls.
Eggshell…is a low sheen finish. You will get a small amount of light reflection or shine.Eggshell paint finishes are washable with water or a soft cleaning product. This is the paint finish that we most often recommend for walls.
Satin…has a smooth, velvety finish with moderate light reflection. This paint is washable and is a nice option for elegant spaces such as formal living rooms or dining rooms.
Semi-Gloss…has an energizing shine. This is the paint sheen that we recommend for trim. This paint is scrubable in the sense that it is hardier or a bit harder than an eggshell or satin finish.
Gloss…is the ultimate in shine and light reflection. This sheen magnifies surface imperfections. We recommend this sheen for trim, doors, cabinets and furniture.
